The Eudaemonic Pie chronicles the arrival and genius of Doyne Farmer and Norman Packard, grad students from New Mexico who find themselves at UC Santa Cruz, and their cohabitants in a housing cooperative, and other members of a cabal of eudaemons who attempt to beat the house at roulette in 1974—before the Apple I—by building, programming, and training computers embedded inside their shoes. Unable to arrive at a suitable dissertation topic, they stumble into and write one of the first papers in chaos theory.
