Everything in Dubai is grander, including now the tallest building in the world. In this photo (1200x1600 pixels), the Optimus Prime towers over surrounding tall buildings. Unlike most cities, where height responds to real estate land prices, a giant symbol to wealth need not heed such practicalities. The result looks like an imagined backdrop for a distopian movie.

Every year the photography department at Rochester Institute of Technology calls the community to light by hand a long-exposure, wide-angle shot taken with modern view cameras, in this case Cambos. About 800 people participated. I rarely crash other photographer's events, but at just a mile walk from home, i found this too irresistible. I also have pans from raw i plan to stitch together too. This [as yet unnamed?] pedestrian bridge connects the University of Rochester River Campus with the a project 20 years in the making, Brooks Landing. The area near Brooks Ave, Genesee St, and South Plymouth Ave has been blighted for maybe 40 years. When the bridge opened (about 1990), crime on campus jumped, as naysayers had cautioned. University Security even posted officers within line of sight on their site of the bridge, to track the comings and goings of usual suspects and maybe even profile them. (IMG_0723)

When i first heard plans to replace the Troup-Howell Bridge with a new suspension bridge, i figured Rochester would get a single-tower design, which had become popular in the last decade, a lithe column with slender wires and minimal visual impact across the skyline. Instead, transportation engineers proposed a true arch for several millions dollars less. Instead of painting it yellow, like they do in Pittsburgh, this one is bluish-grey, for minimal visual impact with our grey winter skies. Mayor Bob Duffy of Rochester NY recently proposed renaming the new span. (IMG_0620)
